Frequently Asked Questions

What is LiveJournal / How do I log in?

LiveJournal is an online blogging service, available at http://www.livejournal.com. To be able to log in to the service, you must create an account at their site. They have many different packages available, and they start at free, and the maximum amount is still really inexpensive.

ElJay crashes at startup, or 'quits unexpectedly'. What do I do?

This shouldn't happen anymore, but we can try a few things from here. First, make sure you are running the latest revision of ElJay (0.9.8.1), from Android Market. If you are, attempt to uninstall ElJay by going to your program list, selecting 'Settings', then 'Applications', 'Manage Applications', select ElJay, and hit the Uninstall button. Once the application has been uninstalled successfully, go back to Android Market and attempt installation again.

Why doesn't ElJay let me edit my last post, edit any post, read my friends page, send pictures, etc?

Little by little, I'm adding features to the client. This is my first Android project, and I have a full time job beyond this little application, so I'm adding the cool stuff as quickly as I can! Everything you see in this question is something I hope to add later. If you have other ideas, feel free to send them to me at android@dytara.com.

0.9.8, 2008-11-12 at 5:00pm CST
  • Refactor all LiveJournal communication code to happen in a background service, so switching keyboard or device orientation does not break the connection between the phone and LJ.
  • Improved memory usage.
  • Better handling of slower networks, including login, posting, and location handling.
  • Added quick link to the eljay_android community on LiveJournal.
  • Changed 'mood' selection to an auto-complete text field.
  • Better caching of user pictures so subsequent visits to that menu do not take forever.

0.9.7, 2008-11-04 at 10:15am CST
  • Added quick links, allowing you to quickly open a browser window to your recent entries, friends list, user info, and calendar.
  • Attempt at fixing the endless loop of connection failures that occasionally happens to people, however, this seems to actually be a bug in Android RC29.
  • Location services now attempt to find the best available location, rather than the easiest.
  • Location now attempts to do updates on demand, to try to spare your battery a little more.
  • New 'Fuzz Location' preference, forcing your coordinates to be slightly different than your actual location, within a few block radius.
0.9.6, 2008-11-02 at 5:15pm CST
Fixed Mood search-ahead, typing letters to narrow down the mood and selecting a mood now shows the correct mood in the Mood field. Added confirmation dialog to Discard button, to prevent future entry losses.
0.9.5, 2008-11-02 at 9:50am CST
Fixed an issue where some users would experience a crash when the application loads. This was due to the user not having GPS or Google's "network location" services turned on. This is now double checked, and will just ignore location when it isn't turned on, like it should.
0.9.4, 2008-11-01 at 11:15am CDT
Re-published application on Android Market. This featured a redesigned LJ interface which allowed for better error handling, and keeping account information properly when navigating menus and switching orientation of the device. We also added support for basic security filters, allowing for public, private, or friends-only posting.
0.9.3, 2008-10-30 at 7:00am CDT
Redesigned some UI elements, and attempted to reduce the number of errors other users were experiencing. Added support for tags.
